Kneehigh Theatre Co The Red Shoes (116)
Drams none made me want to dance oh errr!
Venue Pleasance Courtyard not Dome in programme(33)
Address 60 the Pleasance
Reviewer Thelma Good
This is a deliciously wicked take on the story of the Red Shoes taking
us back to the raw, underlying heart of the fairy tale. The cast of five
play various parts and the glorious figure of Lady Lydia guides us and
the rest of the cast through the story. Garbed in velvet and feathers
she assigns the roles as the tale grows - watch the past-over actors as
they stand, still clothed only in the vest and pants they enter from the
audience with.
The flexible set designed by Bill Mitchell, creates a internal room with
look in openings. With the suitcases they also carry in, they use simple
things to create an intricate interpretation of the girl who got the shoes
she wished for and found her obsession take her over. Frequently they
use intense music, some opera, and singing to add to the already heightened
very theatrical production. The lighting by Alex Wardle adds even more
to an already highly charged style.
The Red Shoes is amusing and moving, sometimes deeply shocking as these
accomplished actors create vivid scenes. Directed immaculately by Emma
Rice the cast of Giles King, Bec Appletree, John Surman, Paul Hunter and
Mike Shepherd have a production which thrills and transports and gets
a Good's Great from me. Note it's not in the pleasance Dome but in Pleasance
One in their Courtyard. Venue 33. Don't miss it! On at 15:30 (17:00) until
27 August not 21.
