On 10 May 2006 the shortlists for ten categories of The Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland for 2005 - 06 drawn up by 13 of Scotland's Theatre Critics were announced. 21 different productions and 18 companies were shortlisted. Categories are Best Performance ( Male and Female) , Best Direction, Best Ensemble, Best Children's Show, Best New Play, Best Design, Best Music, Best Technical Presentation and Best Production.

The winners will be announced on 4 June 2006 in a special ceremony, sponsored by City of Discovery Campaign, at the Discovery Centre in Dundee.

Unveiling the shortlists Robert Dawson Scott, Convenor of CATS, said:

"The first few months of the National Theatre of Scotland have proved to be both a popular and critical success. It is in line with its innovative model that all its nominations are the result of partnerships and co-productions with the existing talent pool. Once again we were struck by the quality of work being produced across the country, from Shetland to East Lothian and from large and small companies."

Before the Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland there were no awards which concentrated exclusively on the unique voices of theatre in Scotland. Previously the nearest equivalent was the TMA Regional Theatre Awards, administered by the Theatre Managers Association in London, which cover theatre, opera and dance all over the UK outside London.

The Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland were first awarded in 2003 for five categories, Best Performance (Male and Female), Best Design, Best New Play and Best Production. Ten categories were involved in the 2003 - 04 and 2004 - 05 Awards when Best Ensemble, Best Children's, Best Music, Best Technical Presentation and Best Production were added to the original five.

Any professional theatre work produced in Scotland in the last twelve months from May 2005 - April 2006, (the natural break in the theatre year) was eligible.
