Announcing the shortlists CATS Convenor, Robert Dawson Scott, said "When
the Critics Awards were introduced last year, it was to highlight the
quality of the year-round contribution that the theatre makes to the cultural
life of Scotland. Although we see the shows through the year, considering
our shortlist reminds us just how much good work there has been. Once
again we have been bowled over by the quality and diversity of theatre
produced in Scotland, not to mention the quantity. With over 150 eligible
productions to consider, the creation of the shortlists for the 2004 Awards
represented a significant, but stimulating challenge."
He added We are delighted to be holding the inaugural CATS Awards Ceremony
in Stirling, which sits at the crossroads of the nation. The dramatic
architecture of the Tolbooth will provide a suitably inspiring backdrop
for the event, and we are grateful to Stirling Council for their generous
support in
enabling us to stage the ceremony.
Before these Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland there were no awards
which concentrated exclusively on the unique voices of theatre in Scotland.
Previously the nearest equivalent was the TMA Regional Theatre Awards,
administered by the Theatre Managers Association in London, which cover
theatre, opera and dance all over the UK outside London. Scottish production
have and continue to feature in them look at EdinburghGuide's pages on
the TMA Awards for 2003
and 2002.
