News reported in 2002
Gone but Remembered
Sadly on 23 January 2002 John McGrath
film producer (Carrington), playwright of many plays (including The Cheviot,
the Stag and the Black, Black Oil + Blood Red Roses), writer of Z Cars
episodes, founder of 7:84 Theatre Company and Socialist died aged 66.
By his many activities he hoped to change way the world was. In Scotland
he influenced its continuing if imperfect transformation particularily
in theatre which reached into and reflected communities. He wrote two
influential books about theatre A Good Night Out and The Bone Won't Break
and a third is expected to be publish in late Spring 2002. For more look
at his obituaries in The Guardian, Herald and Scotsman of 24 January.
There was a celebration of his life in The Assembly Rooms Edinburgh on
19 May see review
and his Play Hyperlynx was at the Pleasance during the festival.
Phil McCall actor died tragically
29 January 2002. A fine and gifted actor in his seventies with a lovely
mischevious wise smile. A socialist he cared for his fellowman and was
honoured by Equity for his active support to improve the lot of actors
over 50 years.
