Dynamic and versatile.

The two contrasting works in the Spring 2005 programme certainly exemplify the diverse performance, acting and dance skills of this small yet dynamic and versatile company.

The full title of Michael Popper’s work is “In fact you can keep a good dog down, but the dog – not knowing this – will keep trying to get up.” But you can forget this as it doesn’t really explain the narrative – although a dog-like character does appear. First off, this is a not dance, in the conventional sense. This is a blend of physical theatre, farce, drama, movement and musical sequences.

On a bare stage are three freestanding doors. Through one walks an airline steward who addresses the audience as if we are passengers on an aircraft. The full safety procedure begins – exits, mobile phones, dimming of lights. All very clever but this is a comedy sketch – where is the dancing?  The aircraft scenario evolves into demonstrations of how to keep healthy on a long flight. It’s all rather reminiscent of Monty Python involving bizarre jumping, somersaults and silly walks.

The work is described as about exploring issues of “fragility and desire”.  The theme of love and attraction runs through dramatised scenes about answering Lonely Heart advertisements. One friendly chap likes to be treated like a dog. Another is a fish- tailed merman. In a colourful sketch depicting the art of seduction, there are moments of delightfully neat ensemble dancing but more akin to a chorus line in a musical.  All in all, this is a lighthearted zany comedy with a fine selection of popular jazzy tunes. It may not be dance but it certainly appealed to a large crowd in the stalls who were laughing uproariously throughout.

A standing female dancer lifts her large hooped skirt so a male dancer can pull on the laces of her stays as he sits on the ground his legs raise by the effort.

Warning. Luxuria starts in a strange manner. One by one, five men dressed in green commando-style outfits with long ribbons. They somersault, jump, hop and march about. The crowd in the stalls began to laugh again. But then the sound of rain and a romantically gothic, Peter Greenaway-style music score featuring harpsichord, piano and haunting cello strings, changes the mood. Five women in cream hooped ball gowns glide gracefully around the stage.  In a seductive waltz the men lift the girls on to their shoulders, moving with breathtaking skill and balance. The girls slowly, erotically, undress and in camisole and knickers the couples dance a slow smooching tango to the strumming of a Spanish guitar.

Led by the slow motion pace and delicate tone of the music, the girls don’t simply dance the part, but tangibly dramatise alter ego sexy women, whose movements tease, tempt and control the men. The subtext is dark and menacing which gradually develops into a beautiful, sensual, mesmerising vision. Full marks to Liv Lorent for a unique imaginative creation, Paul Shriek for fabulous costumes and Tim Skelly for subtle, soft lighting.
