Great range of styles and atmospheres.
To celebrate 10 years of bringing street dance into theatres, Freshmess
have put together a programme which is more varied than most of their
work has been. Between the three pieces, the first two are world premieres,
there is a great range of styles and atmospheres. A range greatly appreciated
by the mainly young Children's Festival audience at the Traverse.
The opening work Vinyl Lino, choreographed
by Frank McConnell, is new take on street dance from a Scottish
perspective. The music is more Celtic and the moves a little more restrained
at first. The dancers practice steps on the vinyl square in the centre
of the stage, some more hesitant than others. But as it develops they
discover more fluent and expressive ways to interpret the music, and the
hesitant ones become more confident, till they all combine in a melodic
swirling finale.
Ethelinda Lashley-Johnstone's Distant
Voices is a more introspective piece, mainly danced in couples,
sometimes of the same sex. The subtext, spoken at the beginning and again
later, is "We are more alike than we are unalike", and the dancers
move in mainly synchronised ways testing each others strengths and weaknesses.
The slow and sensual pace of much of this is unlike most of their previous
work, but it was just as warmly received by the audience.
The closing piece is Artistic Director Allan Irvine's One
to Grow On, performed live to sounds created by DJ Wallace
Sulley. It takes in the full range of dance styles, performed to an
eclectic collection of tracks, and shows off to great effect the vigour
and excitement that Freshmess have made their own.
Dance always has a presence at the Children's International Theatre Festival,
this year there are two Scottish dance companies presenting work, Freshmess
and the Scottish Dance Theatre's co-production with Dundee Rep of Monkey.
Both companies are expanding their range, Freshmess who come from the
street here show they're expanding their horizons and taking their audience
with them on the journey. After a short tour, this triple bill will be
at Dance Base for the 2006 Edinburgh Festival Fringe from 10 to 20 August.
