Slow start but magical family show. Transforming such a popular film as Edward Scissorhands to the stage was always going to be a challenge and certainly Matthew Bourne's New Adventures production is a visual spectacle. High octane entertainment, the show is enhanced by a live orchestra with music composed, arranged and adapted from Danny Elfman's original score by Terry Davies - his third collaboration with the company. Developed over a period of 7 years, the show is a result of a collaboration between Bourne, who shot to fame in the mid l990's with his Adventures in Motion Pictures all male Swan Lake and Lez Brotherston, the New Adventures set and costume designer who won a Tony Award for Swan Lake with the support and enthusiasm of Tim Burton, who wrote the original story and directed the movie. The show starts off ponderously with the inventor creating Edward Scissorhands. This arresting individual is played sensitively by Sam Archer who successfully recreates the childlike innocence of discovery. Once the inventor dies however, it soon gathers pace. Through rapid scene changes, creatively designed by Lez Brotherston, we are taken on Edward's journey to the Boggs family who live in a 'perfect' l950's small American town - Hope Springs - where all the houses are identical. There we are introduced to a variety of characters whose idiosyncrasies are often humorously brought out - in particular, the suburban seductress - beautifully portrayed by Michela Meazza, and her mousy husband Steve Kirkham. Set in the l950's, Lez Brotherston's wonderful costumes and Bourne's rock sequences depict the era perfectly. However, the dancers' talents could have been used to a greater degree. Even in the dream scene when Edward has removed his scissors and dances a duet with his love, Kim Boggs, there is an anticipation of prowess which is not realised. But the essence of the show is human fraility. Through Edward we see the emergence of a gentle human being, who begins to blossom and integrate into this closeknit community. Edward appreciated for his scissor wielding skills including topiary, displayed by Sam Archer adroitly, receives much attention until he falls in love with Kim Boggs - an act that not only upsets her boyfriend but causes the townsfolks to see him differently. A poignant story this, the first stage adaptation of Edward Scissorhands, is great family entertainment with many magical moments, some of which are indeed memorable. Bourne's adaptation of Edward Scissorhands for the stage keeps to the original story but vamps it up. © Barbara Bryan 8 February 2006 - Published on EdinburghGuide.com Dancers - Edward Scissorhands - Sam Archer / Richard Winsor, Peg Boggs (all American mother) - Etta Murfitt, Bill Boggs (all American father) - Scott Ambler, Kim Boggs (all American girl) - Kerry Biggin / Hannah Vassallo, Kevin Boggs (all American kid) - Gavin Eden, Joyce Munroe (town Vixen) - Michela Meazza, George Munroe (cuckold) - Steve Kirkham, Miss Bunny Munroe (teen beauty queen) - Sophia Hurdley, Gerald Munroe - Shaun Walters, Esmeralda Evercreech (religious nut) - Rachel Morrow, Rev.
