Innovative ideas show potential..

Street styles and contemporary dance combine to make three different urban-orientated pieces. The first piece in the trilogy entitled Urbanik Sessions Vol.1 demonstrates this new-dance recipe in a mish-mash of styles, beats and rhythms. Four dancers do their “thing” in their own time to a voice - who we can only assume is the choreographer – describing their movements. The recording is then mixed-up with mellow electronic beats as the dancers move about the stage playing with sound equipment. It’s a confused piece without reason or continuity. It’s as though the dancers are having a jam session of headphones and grooves.

The second piece, Compound is the “artsy” one. Two male dancers in suits move with intensity to a culmination of music styles, piercing beats and a female vocal recording. It explores the question – Where Do You Come From? – demonstrated through sound, music by DJ Dolphin Boy, and dance. It is an ambitious piece that occasionally gets bogged down with being complex. But it is perhaps in this section that some of the most impressive physical movements are shown and of all the three pieces it has the most heart.

The mood lifts in the last piece Moonwalk on a Rainbow. It’s a lot more fun and the music becomes funky and fresh. The dancers bop about in an energetic fashion both collectively and individually.

Overall, there are some innovative ideas that each of the three different choreographers try to create. But does it work as a stage piece? Perhaps not as well as it could. The dancers are trained in different dance backgrounds which means they don’t always appear comfortable changing from one style to the next. With development this concept may work more fluidly. The overall result isn’t particularly impressive but if you’re interested in Hip-Hop and Funk Dance then you will most likely enjoy it.
