Huff, Puff and Away is designed for three to six year olds, and while
it won't aways blow them away there are some captivating sequences.
The two dancers, Michael Scott and the engaging Tara Hodgson are accompanied
by Rory McLeod as they play in the clouds, find red feathers and get swept
around by the wind. His style is strongly reminescent of the hippy musicians
of the sixties, mainly playing guitar and singing his simple songs. Fortunately
he varies the instruments and the tempo, there are gorgeous Andean pipes
and foot tapping hoe-down music but his poems lacks the
zing and fun that would really appeal to this age group.
Brian Hartley's set has some effective elements as does Crawford Mackenzie's
costume for Hodgson - the balloon skirt. The costume for McLeod, a drab
raincoat with added bright arrows, coupled with a multi-coloured John
Lennon style hat shading his face, might have worked when we still thought
all janitors were jolly.
There's no overall story to this over long offering from Tabula Rasa and
while there's some well choreographed moments, its unfinished, fragmentary
feel means it fails to fly.
