The washing experience of your life.
Adrienne's is a launderette from a much better place. Her laundry room
has got a comfy chairs and sofa so you can float away into her world.
She welcomes you in and makes sure your bag of washing will survive the
experience. Checking over your dirty laundry she makes it clear this will
not be humiliating, making you feel at ease.
Each time she does a wash it's different as the audience brings different
pasts and stains into the spin of performance. Adrian Howell's
Adrienne has that special energy, from the moment you set eyes on her,
platformed shoed, wearing an elegant embroidered silky top over a flared
denim skirt Adrienne's style attracts and intrigues.
Photos from Adrian's life are spread across one long wall of the room,
we're invited to look and to ask questions - she'll ask questions too
of us. Wash in the machine, we're seated and sharing stories, thoughts
about why women can wear what they like and men still are so often drabs
beside the sparkling, soft fabric made up women. If men could dress as
they pleased, how much more colourful and relaxed the world could be.
And it's not all clothing and makeup talk feelings and emotions have space
to hang out too.
There's a simple game to play and you get a look at more souvenirs of
Adrian's life amongst stars and celebrities as well as people you've never
heard of till now. It's likely items of your own past will mix in under
his gentle washing out. It's a mix of mutual confessional, celebration
of treasured movements and desires so you and your washing emerge eased,
recondition and sweet smelling. If you can wait in the Arches bars for
the tumble dry cycle your clothes will be ready-to-wear-dry as well as
well cleaned.
Is this theatre or performance art or cross dressing confessional, or
what? All and more thanks to Adrian and his chum Johnny McKnight, who
had the original idea. So, get some clothes dirty and go and get the washing
experience of your life from Adrienne while you can. And hope this new
show from Howells the result of An Arches New Work Commission goes on
(r)evolving.
