Aladdin - part of The Puppet Animation Festival 2002
Creators & Puppeteers - Carolyn and Les Lambert
Company - Jack O'Lantern 01505 704 398
Venue - Netherbow Theatre
Date - 12 April 2002
Reviewer - Thelma Good

The shadow puppets are wonderful, beautifully made and performed with backgrounds which take us to Arabia, to the cave where the lamp is hidden and by flying carpet to China. The colourings of the backgrounds and the costumes of Aladdin, his large grumpy washerwoman Mum and Princess Peachblossom and her father make the story shine like a jewelled book and is intensely, visually satisfying. The accompanying Chinese music further adds to the feeling of being flown to far away and long ago.

It's in the storytelling that the puppeteers sometimes let themselves down, by being too wordy and occassionally getting the order of the details wrong. Once they have got the script tighter these puppets should have the production their excellence hints at.
