Theatre listings > Arthur - The Story
Of A King. - Tour & World Premiere.
He was a bit of a king Arthur and this wee theatre company does ggggreat job of telling us the stories around him. Andy Cannon has called up Iain Johnstone and David Trouton to join him - they bring their DJs and there's a piano for David. Andy's particularly keen to tell the tale (He's a bit of a know-it-all), Iain and David are a bit more questioning but they humour him - it's hard not to. With cereal boxes, candles, candle sticks, a square (do trust them) table and few books they set out to tell the yarns, pulling on the different threads. Yep they don't ignore the many of versions of this old and strong legend and there's plenty of puns and fun. Themes of jealousy, Arthur's step sister and her son, the outbreaks of distant trouble threatening the stability of Camelot, whether it is better to have many little states or a big one and whether might is stronger or better than sitting round a table are as relevant today as they have always been. The incredible Gaelic singer from Lewis Alyth McCormack increases the fey feel, appearing behind translucent screens like a mythic creature with three female musicians playing clarsach, oboe, fiddle, and cello. Projected mediaeval and Pre-Raphaelite paintings and woodcuts inspired by the stories of Arthur and his knights all add to the rich narrative from the Celtic twilight. Wee Stories treat their audience to a hugely enjoyable time. They fire the desire to read books, look at paintings, to be told stories so they never die or lie forgot and to eat up your cereals so you can wear the helmet the packet really longs to become. ©Thelma Good 13 September 2003 - Published on EdinburghGuide.com Cast - Andy Cannon, Iain Johnstone and David Trouton.
