Reduced to laughing tears!
After a two year absence, The Reduced Shakespeare Company return to the
Royal Lyceum on fine form with this hilarious retelling of The Bible.
Blair, Bush, The Easter Bunny
..and, oh yes, some
biblical characters, are all thrown into what has to be one of the most
side splitting experiences you are likely to see this year and a must
for all the family.
The set, typical of The Reduced Shakespeare Company, is next to nothing.
Just one to one; performer to audience, a lot of costume changing, a few
songs and a hysterically clever script, executed by a cast of three that
are simply faultless. It is hard, if not impossible, to single out one
out of the three as they were all nothing short of wonderful. However,
Simon Jermond is painfully good as the lovable fool of the three. Just
looking at him tickles you and when he opens his mouth you simply don´t
have a prayer. Laugh? I almost died!
The costumes are understandably simple, but none the less effective. Simon
Jermond is constantly subjected to playing the woman, which inevitably
results in some more than amusing consequences. Christie Peter-Watson´s
appearance as the Easter Bunny is equally as humorous and....well...there
are simply too many things here to mention.
The bottom line here is this show just should not be missed. There is
a undeniable sense of magic about The Reduced Shakespeare Company. An
uncanny ability to continuously make people laugh and leave them crying
out for more is a special gift indeed and one greatly needed in these
times. The bloke upstairs is probably having a right chuckle, so why don´t
you. Wherever they are, near or far, go see them. You´ll be happier
for it.
