Gorgeously accomplished and unique style
Help me, say the tiny notes. It's a well known fairy tale but Shona Reppe's
Cinderella really looks as though she sleeps in the ashes. She also suffers
an nearly impossible life bullied by her wickedly cruel step sisters -
a right gaudy pair of common gloves - hearing only her father's footsteps
and longing for him to remember her. A really ragged Cinderella uses great
effort to keep the house clean, keeping the savage dog quiet with a bone.
Yes it's the neglected girl who's penning the notes, hoping and keeping
her spirit together.
Played on a specially designed table top high stage, containing many
surprises and delights, this young creator and performer's spit new play
is fantastically well done. Parent or child, carer or cared for or just
there because you'd heard her shows were something special you become
part of an enthralled audience.
Shona Reppe becomes the fairy godmother and transforms Cinderella into
a beautiful sight, she's not able to take us to the ball or the wedding
but we get to see Cinderella's dreams so her delight and the magic of
the night are stronger than ever. The charm and mischevious winks of Shona
Reppe in the play's lighter movements and her gentle moving of Cinderella
in the darker ones all making the fairy story and those, vicious sisters
alive. Shona Reppe is a gifted maker of puppets dramatising tales for
all in a gorgeously accomplished and unique style. One of the best shows
this festival.
