Won't appeal to some.
The Court painter and the Court musician are arranged either side of the
stage. In the middle on the backcloth is an semi circle of white. To gasps
of delight a hand appears and a paint brush.
The Queen of Colours lives in a black and white castle, sleeps (noisily)
on a black and white bed, outside the tree she swings on with one arm
too is black and white. Imperiously the Queen orders the Court Painter
to add colour to her life.
Red is the first which sends everyone a little wild, then blue which cools
too much, so yellow to warm things up. Each colour has its upside and
its down and the Queen is very entertaining as she explores the different
worlds and orders the musician and painter about.
The live cartoon created as we watch has lots of jokes about the fact
it's happening through paint and paper. While the Queen, a rod shadow
puppet with a marvellous thread arm and wispy hair that stands on end
at times, contains both power and loneliness as moved and voiced by Paul
Olbrich. It mostly keep the audience watching but this may not appeal
to children who like their theatre with a lot of physical action or are
highly adversed to the calming, almost controlling performance from Eva
Noell's Court Painter.
