Just too haphazard & muddling.
It's the well known story but with different touches told by three actors,
one with a cello, one with an accordion and one with a bright pink karaoke
machine. While the cellist really only plays her instrument in a conventional
way, the accordionist gets lots of sound out of his instrument, while
the third creates snow storms, wind and more using her machine's microphone.
This Snow White is a bit of a hair twiddler but what gets her expelled
from her family home and nearly killed is that even the stepmother's dog
admits Snow White is the prettiest of all. The family huntsman John who
spares Snow White then travels to escape, sends sad but amusing letters
about his jobs and experiences. Snow White finally finds herself staying
with the seven dwarves in the Land of Sevens, but thankfully cleaning
their home never happens.
Sgaramusch's version has some amusing and more adult hard edged touches,
you feel the longing between Snow White and John. Unfortunately it wanders
all over the place adding in totally unrelated snippets of tales, the
men who went up Ben Nevis including Travis is particularly weird. Was
it an attempt to throw in a bit because they were in Scotland? If so they
were wrongly advised, the story if it exists isn't well known.
At only 35 minutes Snow White should have past too quickly, but it felt
about 15 minutes longer as you tried to hold a coherent story in your
head. The material's inconsequential moments had me wondering if there
had been a break down in translation, I overheard a young girl remark
" Too haphazard and muddling". I agree. And it's such a strange
length 35 mins, why didn't the company allow themselves a longer performance
to allow the story's meanders to flow into the main stream of the story.
