Actively enjoying all the fun.

When the Little Gentleman is led on by the woman who's been arranging the musicians just right the happy hubbub, fell silent and "It's very quiet" says one child. Yes, from the start this production takes hold of the audience so we follow the sad, lonely man as he tries to have fun with his tiny stuffed toy man. Jay Manley hits just the right note as the precise man, dressed conservatively with a bow tie and slightly large tweed jacket and slightly short trousers.

Still lonely at night he pulls out his bed from the set, brushes his teeth and goes sadly to sleep. But in the night he has an idea inspired by the music he hears. Excitedly he makes notices saying, "The The Little Gentleman wants a friend". After sticking them on the forest trees round the set he goes back to bed.

Waking up he and we wait expectantly, but 10 days later his optimism has gone, though we're still hoping against hope, but no one has come. Then behind the set there's a bark, next a tail wagging and a ball toss into the air. He doesn't notice. But we do. "It's a Dog!" a child cries excitedly and we try to get the man to realise someone's there. Maria Öller bounces in, a hairy hound with big eyes. Before soon the Dog has moved in and we follow them through a year of friendship as they enjoy the changing weather and share biscuits and bones. "Can we take the Dog back to School?" remarked one child as we all delight in the dog's and the man's antics.

With the music well worked in and two fine actors on a set full of well thought out surprises, this is a production which has the children actively enjoying all the fun and responding to the sadder moments as well. Catherine Wheels are a Scottish company that make young and old feel good about life and friendship, and theatre too.
