Twists galore, and witty lines
Written by Ira Levin who wrote Rosemary's Baby and The Stepford Wives,
Deathtrap has twists galore, and witty lines to keep the action tight
and surprising. It also has the standard components, 5 characters - husband
and wife, student, lawyer and psychic, one setting - the writer's study
in Newport, Connecticut, a variety of weapons - axe, samurai swords (3)
and more, not to mention the essential - a host of motives.
David Soul turns in a crisp, very pleasing performance as the husband,
Sidney Bruhl, a formerly successful murder mystery playwright. Bruhl's
originality may have dried up but his tongue and wit are still barbed
as he flings out observations on writing , critics and the theatre. His
wife Myra, Susan Penhaligon, is getting a little keen he should support
her for a change. Not earning enough Sidney is teaching thriller play
writers when one student, Clifford Anderson, sends a script to die for.
Sidney invites him over to discuss it and in walks a tall, rangy, young
man in cowboy boots with a certain way of swaying his butt. Myra looks
him over and so does Sidney and later so does his lawyer Porter Milgrim,
Stewart Bevan. Clifford is played by Gerald Kyd who handles well this
character's sly charm. Periodically, in drops the psychic staying near
by, Helga ten Drop, a wonderfully weird woman, superbly zanily played
by Becky Hindley. With lots of action, shifts in fortunes, and three,
intriguing, well played characters this production ensures you are kept
guessing, laughing and surprised to the very end.
