Fully realised theatre experience
A boy and a girl stand hand in hand at the back of the stage then vanish.
Next they hurtle in from the side exits, pushing 2 supermarket trollies,
jabbering in a rich Irish accent. They come from Park City, born on the
same day and now at 17, still inseparable.
As Pig Andrew Clarke is by turn mischievous disarming child, reckless
boy with a mean temper and ardent, lyrical lover. At his side Frances
Thorburn gives us Runt, beautiful in a Bjork way, fearless and passionate.
Their characters may have mean lives but they turn them into a story of
operatic intensity as the Irish vowels and pace roll and crash into the
space. Pig and Runt hang out, get drunk, go to discos and off-licences
and into increasingly dangereous scrapes. Finally they stand apart from
one another, separated by disorder and destruction. Yet by the end the
complex idea of hating the sin and yet loving the sinner almost seems
obvious - a measure of the strength and depth of this play.
Walsh's script, as the grammar collapses under the characters'
forward rushes, becomes the main musical score, the quiet moments as telling
as the spoken. Newell's direction gives added bounce and turbulence to
Pig and Runt, with sharp scene changes which never halt the action. It's
a 45 minute platform production, set on the stage of the present large
production of the Dundee Rep Resident Company with just two actors and
minimal setting but the result is a fully realised theatre experience.
