Sensory stimulation but lacks development.
An immaculately turned out housewife explores sexuality and sensuality
through her secret life as a vibrator saleswoman and Drag King in Diane
Torr's performance piece, recently showcased as part of The Arches Theatre
Festival.
Having been forewarned by the publicity that this piece was 'infamous',
what most surprises about this work is not its provocative content but
the gentleness of the delivery. Diane Torr comes over as a slightly tentative
host, managing to engage the audience with her genuine warmth rather than
slick theatricality. What she communicates most strongly is a deep affection
for all the characters she introduces us to, from historical drag kings
to secret drag queen members of an all male machismo-building society.
Most of all, the piece is a celebration of sensuality. The audience is
invited to enjoy and experience a rich tapestry of taste, touch and texture
and the show is truly multi-media, utilising film, music and sound, human
art exhibits and even audience refreshment to take the watcher on a sensory
journey. It is a pleasurable excursion, both provocative and entertaining.
However, the show ends rather abruptly and feels inconclusive and undeveloped.
As a piece of performance art, perhaps it is ok just to experience the
experience. As a piece of theatre, the show catches our attention with
an array of intriguing characters and situations which we would love to
explore further, but are never given the chance.
All in all, it is an interesting and enjoyable piece, making up in sensory
stimulation what it lacks in narrative development.
