A subtle entertainment.

On a breathtakingly beautiful raised set The Puppet Lab create a miniature world of trees, a river, a well, and Mother Hubbard's house. The puppeteers rotate the set as they animate a magical world of nursery characters. As they do so we see Tom Thumb falling into the plum pie Mother Hubbard is making, Baby Bear losing his football up a tree and then Jack and Jill quarrelling over their bucket by the well. The show is packed with varied surroundings and stories.

The charm of this show is in the detail - of the puppets, of the shiny tiny pans in Mother Hubbard's kitchen, even in the incidental characters like the sparkling crow flying away with Baby Bear's ball, or the sound of sheep getting fainter as the puppeter Symon Macintyre moves the flock away into the distance. At times though the attentiveness to detail and the concentration required to note everything is a drawback. At the Adam Smith the very little ones were restless - it maybe better suited for the 5+ child..

Despite the wonderful set the show could gain from more opportunies to move out and interact with the audience as when Baby Bear shakes his lost ball out of a tree and it bounces out in amongst the audience. The puppet world would draw closer to us if the puppeteers animate some of the puppets in front of the set.

Yet it did engage, for children were discussing on leaving who amongst the many nursery rhyme characters was their favourite. The two tireless puppeteers create these characters well, providing voices and sound effects for Scruff the dog, the hapless Tom thumb, Mother Hubbard, Cinderella, the three Bears, Baby Bunting, Bo Peep, the very amusing quarrelsome Jack and Jill, the wicked Witch and Robin Hood. There is humour throughout and is certainly worth going to see.
