Loose splicing continually unravels.

Long John Silver is a character who Robert Louis Stevenson created but who has long escaped the novel Treasure Island to become The Pirate. In Flesh'n'Steel we encounter Long John and his two women, Tabitha his partner and Mary her mum. Andrew McLay as Long John makes a dashing pirate, using his wheelchair with speed, Ayo Jones as Tabitha is mysterious and strong while as Mary, Siobhan Rocks signs with dramatic and desciptive flair even hearing people could follow.

It's a set where material sails are suspended using weights and ropes, billowed and filled with wind supplied by fans, sometimes video is projected on them but not to any effect. While the rearranging of the sails could open up the peice but ends up being empty of point. At the beginning the cast place on their clothes pieces of mainly clothed bodies. Not always the pieces you would expect - an eye ball where you expect a knee or a skinned limb.

If this had been a new work just on for a couple of nights in one venue, a work in development I would have come away interested to see the ideas of what happens to fictious creatures after first publication, it is rich with potential. But this production is touring for a month and yet it hasn't got a clear direction to the interesting themes it raises, despite fine cast work particularily from Jones. Disappointing too after seeing this creative partnership's The Irish Giant produced by Birds Of Paradise earlier this autumn.

If you look carefully you'll learn the deaf sign for twat taking us back to the word's origins and few other silent swear words. But the loose splicing of the three character's tales mean that the whole piece continually unravels so the any booty the play could have escapes.
