Keeps you hoping.
He's a short order chef, just been there six weeks. She's been a waitress
at the same place for far longer. We meet them when their one night stand
has taken them back to Frankie's bed.
He's confident he's got a future in his reach now, but Frankie's gonna
need a lot of persuading. Wrong side of thirty she's had more than few
relationships, and Julie Duncanson's spiky performance gives us a woman
afraid to take even a step towards possibility.
Like most people on their own she tries so to look secure, but it's a
tough veneer. Will Johnny crack it? Lewis Howden gets the mix of a man
whose nothing special looked at by a balance sheet or a CV but look at
with a heart he's value comes through. When he speaks he's gleaned a lyrical
tongue from his love of fine words, a balm for Frankie's bitter distancing.
Tenderness waxes and wanes, as both are fearful of another disappointment.
McNally's play gives us both the male and female takes on what it means
to be close and to take a chance. Before sunrise they fall out, make up
and oh so cautiously learn how to see and like what they see.
An adult play about ordinary people, Howden and Duncanson under Michael
Emans' direction, keeps you hoping. Like the all through the night DJ
Johnny gets to play a request, you want to believe that there are Frankies
and Johnnys all over the world finding each other in the moonlight. It's
another quality production from Rapture who are choosing a well selected
variety of plays to tour Scotland's small and medium sized venues.
