Haikus are short, impressionistic poems, this play of the same name
has much of the same qualities. As seasons go by slowly two people meet
and get closer. In each season they encounter each other and the weather.
The man, Tove Bornhoft, (who is also Rio Rose's artistic director)
and the woman, Torkild Lindebjerg, are at first very awkward with each
other in spring when the frogs begin to croak. In each season their
relationship changes, as the weather does and the animals change too.
Done with a gentle humour and interesting physical movement, the playfulness
of humans as they fall into love is lightly and entertainingly shown
by this piece. And as with many well presented pieces of children's
theatre the children spontaneously call out to warn the characters of
dangers such as a kissy woman! Hinting at the annoying times as well
as the fun of human relationships as they go through time, Haiku is
refreshingly short on explanation, trusting in the audience to understand.
Unlke a written haiku a few of the images are unclear but the overall
effect is of a show interesting and fun to watch.
