Jenny Lee is a one-woman riot
Jessie Kesson- A Good Crack at Life is a one-woman show about the
life and struggles of famous Scottish storyteller, novelist and playwright.
It is also a formidable vehicle for the first-rate Edinburgh-born actress/director
Jenny Lee, whose earlier work includes Sue Glover's Bondagers
and The Seal Wife.
Jenny Lee is a supreme mistress of audience manipulation. She moves
amongst the traditional setting with confidence and style, without leaving
one inch of the space and a single prop unused. Watching her switch with
ease between different characters and dialects is as enviable experience
as it is entrancing.
The piece is sensitively written, with a lot of dry humour that reflects
Kesson's own, and one must also mention clever use of lighting that delineates
different scenes.
Forget big scale productions, this is a one-woman show at its best. To
paraphrase Alastair Scott, Jessie Kesson may have so much fun in her,
but it is Jenny Lee who is a one-woman riot.
