Sylvia Troon hits the mark once again as she appears on the stage surrounded
by silver mountains opening glittery boxes and holding their contents
up to a torch. For a brief moment we wonder where this is leading to -
Troon appears to be giving the audience an introduction to "Stones",
the beauty of their colours, textures and names - rose, quartz, amber,
turquoise, fools gold - but what do they have to do with a little lost
dragon?
All is revealed as we meet the dragon family - Mum (Emerald), Dad (Sapphire),
twin sisters (Amber & Amthyst) and their brother (Topaz). The puppets
can only be described as stunning, their deep colours and glistening skins
really are reminiscent of precious an semi precious stones. The dragons
are a happy family until baby Dippy is born and transforms their harmony
and routine with her whines and moans.
She desparately wants to fly and breathe fire like the others but is consistently
told that she is too small. Curiosty gets the better of our little dragon
and as she flys she is blown by Mister Wind to a distant peak where she
finds herself lost and at the mercy of the Ice Wizard. Can Dippy find
her way home? Troon tells the story in her unique style, invoking powerful
imagery, drawing us deeper into dragonland, engaging all with her catchy
songs, use of Scots and quick humour.
The audience are encouraged to stay after the show is over to touch the
stones and the puppets - even the youngest children are fascinated by
the boxes of beads and stones matching the cololurs to the dragons and
asking to hear the names again. Troon in her own words "Loves to
inspire" and it's clear she's done just that.
