The Little Red Cap
- part of The Puppet & Animation Festival 2002
Creators and Puppeteers - Joy Haynes & Karen Torley
Company - Banyan Tree
Venue - Netherbow Theatre
Date - 1 April 2002
Reviewer - Thelma Good
The Banyan Tree's version of Little Red Riding Hood combine a bicycle
seat, a gladstone bag and a furry tail and out comes one of the main characters
- the one with nice shiny teeth. Little Red Cap has a chirpy innocence
and her soft cuddly-looking Grandmother is a fun one even though her legs
have gone all wobbly. The warmth between them is lovely.
Banyan Tree use rod and shadow puppets and a set which transforms in fascinating
ways, using often everyday objects children will race home to imitate
and develop in their own play. The forest teams with life where Grandmother
lives alone in her cottage. Hayes and Torley have created a version of
the old story which makes it fresh and full of delightful detail. The
music both recorded and live, fits the changes in mood so the audience
is right there all the time. A fabulous retelling which goes down very
well with all.
