Celebrating Mums

Female or even male you'll recognise yourself or your Mum or your stressed out friends who all swear nothing will change and turn up 20 years older 3 months later.

This very largely humourous and entertaining production was written by 6 Canadian actresses tramelled by motherhood in 1993. Since then there have been two companies of Mums in Canada, two in the US and Australian continent has had its own too.. Now Mum's The Word has its European premiere here in Scotland and is already getting spontaneous rounds of applause during the performance celebrating mums.

|The Scottish Mums company is joined by Barbara Pollard, one of the original creators and actors. A delight, full of performance vim, Pollard is one of the originators of Vancouver's Theatresports. Scots Blythe Duff (Taggart), Lorraine M McIntosh (Deacon Blue) and Carole Anders (the mother in Terri McIntyre) give particularly warm comic spins to those moments we all try to hide from the world outside, those nappy, crappy moments when your pride and joys cause havoc. Constructed mainly around brief and often linked monologues, only Libby McArthur and Sharon MacKenzie have sad and as it happens less well written monologues to deal with. MacKenzie has the hardest job detailing the first few months of a premature baby. Drawn I suspect from all too real life the writer fails to give it dramatic energy.

The scenes involving the whole company make the show a delight. The bus queue of women pretending not to be encumbered, the motherhood lectures with sections on Amazon.com and the Puppetry of the Penis, maddest of all that trip to the swimming pool where Pollard, has great fun showing her body off much to everyones' delight. It's a great way to celebrate being a Mum, a child or a even a Dad since that covers all of us - take someone you want to thank and laugh with.
