Children don't give standing ovations, they want to talk to the actors
and touch the set. The Night Maze cast were surrounded after the show
ended by lots and lots of excited, thrilled children who had seen their
puzzling lives wonderful explored in The Night Maze. They talked to
each other and smiling with delight. Children are the best critics,
this is an exceptional show.
It's nightime and Sally can't sleep, she's had a trying day. It was
her birthday and it got spoilt. With the children sitting round the
set and two welcoming female actors, Lotte Faarup and Anne Karina Nikolajsen
La Balance are well named. This production, very well directed by Marc
Van Der Velden, treats childhood as the confusing minefield it is when
you hear best friends say awfull things and you feel tiny and unloved.
When Sally's gets to sleep she finds she has to find a treasure. She
comes across a wise Scottish sailor, an octopus and others as she moves
from land to sea and down into the depths where bits of her life dreamlike
and symbolically appear. In this work there is both story and metaphor,
balanced like the best of human tales so that the metaphore illuminates
the story and ensures we are doubly enriched and delighted at one and
the same time.
