Seductive.
It's a seductive piece this, commissioned by the Arches and part of
their varied and quality 2003 Arches Theatre Festival. In some parts of
Scotland it's hard to find fresh new practitioners experimenting and showing
off their freshest ideas. Not in Glasgow and certainly not in the multi
and flexible spaces of the Arches.
It start slowly with waiting. A woman waiting for her phone to ring. And
a man. Different phone and to start with it seems, separate relationships.
The actors/devisors, Julie Brown and John McKnight, are graduates of RSAMD's
BA in Contemporary Theatre Practice and are fine masters of the fine art
of seducing an audience.
In succession of increasingly longer scenes where at first they voice
their internal thoughts they attractively segue into confiding with us,
getting us to colluding in their knowing manipulation of each other. The
pair they become take us through the life and death of a couple, so recognisable
a menu from liking to harsh hatred through the noisy eating habits to
the finale of bitter and strange grounds.
As the woman Brown becomes increasingly interesting, a deceptive mouse
she niggles her way and nips your head while seeming quite reasonable.
John McKnight's timing, performance and cheeky charm had me thinking of
the magnificent Steve, Martin that is. There's a lightly suggested edgy,
unsavouriness which McKnight and Brown's characters project adding a stimulating
dangerous fillip to what could have been insubstantial, light though entertaining
fare.
Staged with a set whose long draped and lit table recalled the last supper
Nothing to Fear Anymore is an introduction to two actor devisors who achieve
that tricky thing, a piece that feels totally immediate and fresh with
a frightening bitter dimension to make it sharp.
