Amusing but unsettling.
The programme has tips for how to have an affair, but after seeing this
play by Keith Waterhouse you may well decide to pass on the opportunity
anyway.
Our Song directed by Ned Sherrin has three central performances making
it amusing but unsettling. Not least Charlotte Emmerson's Angela.
A sliver of a girl she's brittle and waif like, part child, part single-minded
woman - a combination men are drawn to, their eyes blind to the female
mess that makes it. It's a starkly, bare bones playing by Emmerson
which makes you tremble for the precipice you sense Angela is teetering
on.
Peter Bowles's Rodger spots Angela across the room where he and
his guests are celebrating his son's christening. From the beginning his
wife Judith, Caroline Langrishe clocks what going on - be warned
spouses have a radar for this. Judith's playing a long game, not heaping
on blazing confrontations but verbal jabs and meaningful phrases and Langrishe
ensures her few appearances have charm and clarity.
Waterhouse has Rodger in scenes where he's both talking to his wife at
home, appealing or explaining to the audience and exchanging sharp remarks
with Angela. Bowles handles these exchanges and the play with ease.
It's uncommonly like watching a friend rush toward perdition, his companion
along the way being Angela. At first referred to as a freelance factotum,
Angela is young with a disarming awkwardness and inability to use the
right word, she shares Rodger's liking for champagne. We become increasingly
knowing flies on the hotel rooms, flat, bar and restaurant walls of the
suggestive multi-room set as we hear what he in his headlong desire can't.
If you've strayed, been tempted or just watched someone go off the rails
of monogamy. Our Song has tunes you will remember with a wry smile
or a sharp heart pain.
