Peter The Pirate Boy - part of The Puppet Animation Festival 2002
Designer, Puppet maker and puppeteer - Sylvia Troon
Company - Kenspeckle Puppets 01382 330399
Venue seen - Netherbow Theatre Edinburgh
Reviewer - Thelma Good
Maker of a over a dozen shows, Sylvia Troon's puppets, there are lots
and lots, are varied and, extra bonus - made in ways you and your child
can imitate at home from those bits of material and jetsam daily life
yields. She also shares her boundless energy and enthusiasm for performance,
stories, songs and marvellous Scottish words by involving children and
adults to make sounds, move puppets and help the story along. Her show
is irresistibly buoyant.
Peter the Pirate Boy is stolen from his Scottish home by Pirates and we
make the sounds of the sea with rain sticks, the original Chilean cactus
ones and modern highly coloured ones. It's a wonderful sea we create,
you almost smell it and taste the salt on your tongue. Later we create
the storm which releases Peter from his pirate bullies, washing him ashore
to an island where its many, many creatures are suffering under a witch.
And yes we help to set things right there too.
Be prepared to get swept away by Troon's delightful, personal charm and
to make some wonderful, simple puppets when you get home!

Her New Show The Little Lost Dragon (4 - 9) will premiere at the Edinburgh
