Fun, and strongly individual
Fun, and strongly individual, Peter Rinderknecht's Portofino Ballad
delights and surprises children and adults too. He's going to play his
huge double bass and he tells us he likes them because they contain a
lot of air. As he launches into the tune, someone pops out the double
bass and we're off into the world of a father and son trapped into the
the family business, the father once every hour is the cuckoo in the double
bass's clock.
The world of Peter and the two little people is full of lovely details,
there's a nest for the cuckoo man's son, and hidden compartments. The
tiny rod and stick puppets communicate beautifully in a theatre experience
which shines with the lively, loving, creative heart of a superb master.
Talking to the audience, checking their cheap watches and taking their
advice Peter captivates with his imaginative miniature world where a teenage
son plays loud tunes and scoffs at his despairing father. Peter the musician
can't leave them to suffer and his present to them takes us all to the
resort of Portofino in Italy and a respite if not an escape. Told in a
mix of German, Italian and English in a unique laid back style which warms
your heart, Portofino Ballad reveals much more than the difficulties of
being stuck and how hard parents find it to let go. Without a tidy or
wholly happy ending it's much more rugged and real reflecting its gifted
vastly experienced creator. One of Festival's best shows
