From the moment that Meg leaps onto the stage until the curtain closes
Dundee Rep's production of Stuart Paterson's new play Puss In Boots will
keep you entranced with its superb acting, well-timed effects and a fantastic
set. "We leave nothing behind us but our story" and Dundee Rep's
Company leaves us a great one and put themselves out in front in this
year's Christmas shows. Stop reading now and go book a ticket, because
everything after here is just me raving about it.
Andrew Clark brings sincerity to the role of Rab; humble, much
put-upon but brave and ultimately victorious. Beside him at all times
is a smiling and self-assured Susan Harrison in the dual role of
Catherine and the magical, mincing minx, Puss (come on - did I really
write that?). Andrew and Susan play off each other and the
audience well. Queen of audience participation, however, is one Meg
Frazer as rat-catcher and part-time witch Meg Mullach. The show really
starts as soon as you walk into the auditorium, as Meg is already in the
aisles, warming up the crowd and making friends with the wee ones.
Keith Fleming and Rodney Matthew are the two brothers Donal
and Conal, as well as a host of other characters. Playing with flair is
Frances Thorburn as our not so fairytale Princess Rose. John
Buick and Irene Macdougall are a very batty couple as the King
and Queen, with Irene also being evil in the part of mega-fashionable
dance-clubbing witch Lady McInnes- McKenzie. Accompaniment throughout
is provided by composer and musician Aidan O'Rourke, playing fiddle with
a rich tone and expression above anything I've seen in live theatre in
Scotland.
This really is a first class Christmas show and I look forward to seeing
more of Dundee Rep in the near future.
