Great night & Lionel Blair in fishnets!

The Kings Theatre, Glasgow, once again sees the return of Richard O'Brien's cult musical The Rocky Horror Show. For those who don't know the story, Brad and Janet, cute American couple, find themselves being lured into the home of Dr. Frank N Furter after their car breaks down nearby. Fortunately, Frank N Furter's mansion turns out to be a den of iniquity where all sorts of shenanigans take place!

The set is fairly basic with a large staircase centre stage separating out the two main playing areas. There's not a lot of variety in the first half, but there are a few surprises when the stairs open up and a shadow screen is used in the second half for some fruity bedroom scenes. It's generally only when there are two or three performers on stage that you notice the space is rather empty and bland.

The cast is small with four "phantoms" coming on to bulk out the larger numbers such as Time Warp and Sweet Transvestite. I would have liked to have seen the Phantoms more throughout the show. As it was they seem to be there just to make up numbers. That said, cast numbers are always small when companies are touring, but here the dance routines and big numbers didn't disappoint.

Jonathan Wilkes is very saucy in the role of Frank N Furter. Although there will never be a Frank as good as Tim Curry in the movie version, Wilkes did win me over with his amazing singing voice, big thighs and ability to play with the very rowdy crowd, who, on this occasion, were as entertaining as the performers.

The rest of the cast also put on fantastic performances. The singing is amazing all round and the band, under the direction of Iain Vince-Gatt, make sure that we're all up dancing in the aisles by the second song (the first one was a bit slow).

So, great singing, fantastic band and an audience all dressed up in corsets, stockings and other lurid costumes. Can it get any better?

Oh yes! Lionel Blair in stiletto heels and fishnets! He plays the narrator to perfection and uses some of the best audience put-downs I've heard in a while.

The audience make this show as much as the cast and it's definitely worth a visit if only to see Lionel Blair in suspenders.
