Sigurd The Dragon Slayer
- part of The Puppet Animation Festival 2002
Creator and Puppeteer - Iain Halket
Company - Folding Theatre Puppet Company email
Venue - Netherbow Theatre
Date - 13 April 2002
Reviewer - Thelma Good
The is the Ring Cycle imaginatively told for children and the lucky adults
who accompany them, performed in a versatile wooden stage which gives
opportunities for shadow puppets as well as puppets, a cross between glove
puppets and stick ones, whose heads turn in a lifelike way. The carved
dragon who Sigurd has to confront has the flavour of the Norse origins
of the tale. Sigurd himself, Brunhilda sporting a winged helmet and a
real breast, or should I say bosomplate, and her dad the King of the Gods,
Odin all have an attractive rugged look about them.
The tale has Sigurd finding that fear has something to teach him and the
boy becomes a man as he journeys down the Rhine towards his future. It's
quite a tale but Iain Halket engages the audience making full use of the
all the possibilities he has designed into his stage, solving many of
the restrictions being the sole puppeeter can cause. A very well designed
production all round.
