Set in London, David Hare's play perceptively explores the geography of the heart and the jungle of Modern Britain. Kyra, Beth Marshall, has immersed herself in teaching in a rough school in East London, Kyra's complex repression is caught in Marshall's portrayal. Her surprise when young Edward appears is followed by a unmistakable uneasiness when his father, Tom, appears.
Tom is a very successful restaurateur whose outfit in this production needs a more upmarket remake. Surely the way he talks each article would be hand stitched and fashioned. Despite this sartorial challenge John Langford's Tom triumphs - he's every inch the business man who never fully listens to the office-speak he spouts, he's just a blind believer. Kyra is a seeming contrast to him- once his lover, she only left when the wife found out, she's obviously into deception. Hare's play exposes the duplicitous hearts of both Kyra and Tom. Edward's scenes with Kyra which top and tail the play could seem like afterthoughts but young actor David Fitzgerald's Edward makes the point that today's young may be better at relating to others. Robin Peoples has created Kyra's cold attic flat, suggesting her lack
of interest in material things. But the plants are too flourishing for
the suggested temperature and unsettle what is overall a very real looking
production. Robert Paterson directs this cast so Hare's play convinces
and leaves us thoughtful, whether you're Kyra, Tom or Edward you'll come
away seeing more clearly into your own heart. Theatre listings >
