Magical as a overnight fall of snow.
We look at a starlit sky above a couple of house walls with stairs and
lots of windows. Then a big star lights up, the children ahh and point
and windows light up. Catherine Wheels newest production, co-produced
by macRobert and directed by Jay Manley, has got us all softly held in
its magical grasp from the off.
The play is a bit different from the story you may have enjoyed with your
children. The old woman is a somewhat younger, though no less lonely,
woman, Gill Robertson and the Snow Baby appears to arrive in a
different way. But none of this matters when the production has the fun
and imagination of this interpretation.
With windows that people can be seen through sometimes in shadow, and
a soundscape which supports the story, the Snow Baby not only lives for
the woman, he, (or is it a she?), lives for all of us too. The Baby is
skillfully moved by Rick Conte, so we look and see the mischievous high
spirited infant and not him. Conte also plays the kind neighbour,
immersed in his own more sociable life. Robertson ensures that
the woman's slightly uncertain delight at her amazing guest has the children
unprompted trying to help her make him welcome.
Seated beside a six month old I expected to be aware there was a baby
by my side, but fortunately he was riveted, his eyes fixed upon the stage.
At the end he crowed with delight and banged his hands together in imitation
of the wildly applauding pre-schoolers and early primaries. They, like
him, had found The Snow Baby as magical as an overnight fall of snow,
and just as much fun.
