Strange and gentle
We're let in in small groups so that the company can make sure we all
can see sitting on their graduated benches. The care they take in arranging
us is just one of the tuned in things this company do to make children
feel they matter. Oivind Alexander Slaatto, Maria Myrgard and Thomas Danielsen
dressed in matching coats and hats begining by saying in chorus, "There
was a perfectly normal town" and against a stylised set of buildings
the town comes to life. To the delight of the children Oivind Alexander
Slaatton picks up that glorious instrument the tuba, and uses it inventively
to create all sorts of sounds.
Into the normal town one day comes a stranger who walks a different way
and he looks different too, especially his nose. He decides to stay but
his difference is a problem for him and for the townfolk who trick him
and treat him differently. Well he's different isn't he? Teatre Patrasket's
approach is wonderfully strange and gentle, letting you discover lots
about going somewhere else and being unlike those around you.
Using lots of rhymical speech and musical noises, the company's common
background from The Commedia School in Copenhagen gives a style which
is fun, comic and warm. The children respond accordingly, trying to help
the strange man pick up the customs of the town he comes to.
Well worth seeing.
