This promenade production invites the audience to explore the spectacular
wooded hillside setting of the play. But don’t worry , there are opportunities
to sit down and even have a cup of tea while being entertained at every
turn. Featuring characters partly based on Vita Sackville-West Gertrude
Jekyll, Edwin Lutyens, Margaret Fountaine, Marianne North,the play isn’t
a biographical account of their lives. Instead its focus is on their passions
– for butterfly collecting, flower painting, creating gardens. Through
an exploration of such passions, the playwright asks questions about our
relationship with nature. And reminds us that there was a dark side to Eden
as well.
In a playful, intriguing and highly entertaining way, the play explores
this theme through biographical snippets, Victorian side show, myth and
fairytale. The complex design effects, tableaux, video, scents and sound
create a rich, multi-layered sensory experience. It is full of little
delights, surprises, amusements and chilling moments.
The play is anchored ,however, by the core of integrity that comes from
superb performances by a cast of actors who make us believe in the truth
of their characters. The organic feel and seemingly effortless flow of
this piece of theatre is a tribute to fine direction, a skilled production
team and ensemble playing of the highest quality.
