Now and again, a film or piece of theatre comes along that seems entirely routine and straightforward on the surface, but then throws a bucket of water at you and laughs, leaving you thinking "Why didn't I see that coming?". The last time I experienced this was in Kevin Spacey's movie The Usual Suspects and I haven't really been outsmarted since. That was until I saw The Chair Women. Three women are sat in a livingroom watching t.v, slowly getting drunk and talking about…..God knows what. I say this because, to be honest, after half an hour I found myself in the deepest depths of boredom. There was a camera crew also present, which I thought would become more involved, but as the minutes ticked by, their main function seemed to be simply to take close up shots of the actresses nostrils, which we could all see quite vividly on the surrounding screens. But then it happens. It all becomes clear and don't I feel like a right Dodo! Sickeningly clever and superbly executed I……..can’t say anything more without giving it all away. What's unquestionable is the acting is superb and the cast draw you in even though you are not really clear or interested in what their characters are talking about. In a world of reality t.v. and couch potatoes, it seems hard to remember the days when we all used to go to the park, play football and actually interact with three dimensional people. The Chair Women shows us what we are and it's quite a sad sight. I do urge you to go though. And me?
