Very freshness of the performance.

From the moment you clap eyes on the set you just know that it’s going to be an exciting production. Without giving too much away, what the audience are presented with before the play is like something out of a nightmare. The large expanse of the Kings’ stage enclosed in dark stained wood creates a murky, foreboding atmosphere that holds true to the very essence of this mighty play. The stark set combined, muted lighting and puritan costumes are effective but those who haven’t the best eyesight are warned that this play has dim lighting and can at times be very dark.

And it’s not just the set design. Each and every cast member gives their all to portray the complex characters so clearly depicted by Miller. If you are familiar with the film then this play about the Salem Witch Hunts is a must-see for it is almost everything the film fails to realise. Those who know the play will be thrilled at the very freshness of the performance. It is difficult to pick one actor who stands apart, for each actor gives something special to their role. The result is just as the title suggests – a melting pot of vengeful motives, dark secrets, anguish, deceit and bloody murder. You cannot help but be drawn into the chaos and confusion – who accused who? Who or what is to blame? Who will be next?

In an age when a new “witch hunt” for terrorists is upon us, Miller’s allegory of the McCarthy trials seems more pertinent than ever. The play is a lesson to us all and this production encompasses the fundamental nature that lies beneath. Let us not forget that although this play is fiction it is based on fact and what happened during the Salem and the McCarthy Witch hunts were very real indeed. Bearing this in mind, this performance leaves you with the disturbingly uncomfortable realisation of what power combined with fear and suspision can do.
