Humourous and sad about emotions.

Cyrano - Catherine Wheels Production.

It's a story of love and soldiers, of not telling the person you love until it's really too late. The original play had a cast of over 75 actors, Catherine Wheels performs, with three actors, a newly translated version with some engaging ryhmes and, like Cyrano's large nose, it grabs your attention.

Veronica Leer is a gorgeous Roxanne, shyly mischevious, on the brink of womanhood. She has several suitors, the simple Christian and the bullying De Guiche - and also Cyrano whose feelings towards her she does not know. Jordan Young cuts a suitable attractive dash as Christian though his De Guiche could be a smigin more harsh. As Cyrano Ronnie Simon reveals his humanity, his complex personality accomplished with words, liked by many but unable to believe anyone could love him.

The costumes by Alison Brown and flexible set with wheel-about sub-sets creating windows and shops by Karen Tennant really fit the production's approach. It's one where we firstly encounter the actors before they find their roles in the beribboned boxes place at the front of the stage, and where costume changes happen so we are aware of them. The style which adds to the feeling of discovery and engagement as we let ourselves believe in the scenes before us and Dave Trouton's music adds romance often in the shape of well know pop songs.

Although it's largely about love, with a heart skewered by a pen and bound by a ribbon bearing the word True Love tattooed on sets, the stage and costumes, it is a tale for boys and girls because it is humourous and sad about emotions. Cyrano is a tough older solidier, mighty with the sword as well as the pen, Christian is a new recruit who Cyrano decides he'll help woo Roxanne. Their collective fates really collide when Roxanne seeks her newly married husband on the battlefield De Guiche has ripped him away to.

Some might question the relevance of such an ancient tale to children in 2004 but once they've seen Catherine Wheels' production of Jo Roets' version of Cyrano the answer will be clear. It's a great story because we can all be as foolish and as loving as the man with the large nose.
