Wishing you could press rewind. Sometimes you just wish you could press the rewind button! Wee Stories are back with a new show and it's a cracker. Ian Johnstone and Andy Cannon have written and directed this Scottish Highland version of Hans Christian Anderson's story and its bite and rollocking humour are spot on. It starts off with three children going off on a summer holiday by car to the Highlands. The big brother is wishing he was going somewhere else - well he can only see sheep, while little brother and their sister are much keener. The journey north with its bends, sightings of wildlife and passing places is great fun. Then the play morphs, via the strange names our islands sport, to the story the three begin to tell about an island Kiltie, owned by the Laird (a Scottish form of Emperor), his huge wardrobe of kilts and his decision to have a new one for his winter brithday. With all the cast playing several parts the whole audience is totally hooked even before the biggest star of the show appears - and there's pretty stiff competition. The star is Andy Cannon's oh so extraordinary sheep Ramsay, but Iain Johnstone's deaf Big Jessie and Stag and Louise Montgomery's Mr Harris and Mrs McMutton also are more than note worth. They use props in striking, marvellous ways this company, in their Arthur it was cereal packets, here its bits of clothing and clothes hangers. Rebecca Minto's backdrop of collaged material highland landscape confirms no imagination or fun is spared. The premiere run is nearly over but this company know how to make shows of lasting quality and I'm sure we get a chance to enjoy again a marvellous couple of hours be you young, be you old in the company who's only wee in its name the rest is huge entertainment with mega delight for all. © Thelma Good 21 December 2004 - Published on EdinburghGuide.com Cast - The Laird/Big Jessie/Eagle/Stag - Iain Johnstone, Rhona/Mrs McMutton/Mr Tweed - Louise Montgomery and Ramsay/Mr McMutton/Mr Harris - Andy Cannon. 2004 Tour Details for The Emperor's New Kilt.
