Stirs up a Brilliant Brew..

White witches, dark witches, potion brewing, dancing and singing – Hex In The City is just what's needed this Halloween. The mix of material which includes Burns’ Tam O’Shanter, Shakespeare's' Macbeth and so much more makes for a fabulous concoction that will have you cackling. And with a good bit of dancing after it has all the right ingredients for a good night out.

By interlacing Scottish folklore from various periods with poetry, song and a tongue-in-cheek music accompaniment d:vatheatre really make this show their own. From the white witches marketing their herbs and remedies to the Devil himself making an appearance, this entertaining bunch stir up a brilliant brew of legend and laughter. There are some great recitals including an adapted extract from Tam O’Shanter performed from his wife Kate’s perspective.

The costumes appear simple but on closer inspection they are very well designed. Although the witches are dressed similarly each wears a coat slightly different from the next. It’s witch chic – and it shows that a lot of care and consideration has gone into their production.

Simplicity is the word when it comes to the set design, and so it should be. A large full moon hangs glowing bright against the black backdrop. Beneath it sits a small pile of rubble that serves its use as many things including the witches’ bonfire. What more is needed to create an altogether spooky atmosphere?

But there’s more! After the storytelling – and a brief interval - it’s ceilidh time and the audience are invited to the Devils’ Dance at the haunted Alloway Kirk Yard. With nibbles and a dram it’s a Halloween treat that won’t fail to have you clapping along even if you aren’t up to dancing. The Thundering Ceilidh Band put on a good show and really get the dancing on the go. Make sure you catch it in this short run.
