- Tour & World Premiere.
It's only in the press release that Vanishing Point mentions that some of this production is inspired by notable theatre practitioner Zofia Kalinska. But those who know her work will think of her anyway for Lost Ones is full of her image filled and atmosphere rich approach. Dramaturg Nicola McCartney is another skillful behind-the-scenes theatre maker for this inventive piece which is satisfying for an audiences of young and old. But no successful devised work comes from one mind, they come from a shared, discovered vision in which the cast are crucial creators. From the wordless opening scene on, director Matthew Lenton's production uses entrancing approaches and hilarious moments to tell the story, though the musical tracks contributors are not mentioned in the programme - the memerising one used at the beginning is by Glasgow based composer/musician and singer David Paul Jones, other tracks* are by Arvo Part, James MacMillan, Jan Garbarek, Mike Galasso, Jann Tiersen, Nick Cave and Takuo Yuasa. Sandy Grierson is Theodore, a strange, reclusive writer, his earnest, fragile nature draws us in as he withdraws from his loving wife Claire Lamont's Adele. Left alone he finds a strange violinist, excellently realised by Alasdair Macrae, who visits him, emerging through his armchair and in Theodore's chest the writer finds his past comes unsettlingly to the surface. Kai Fischer's set and lighting are strongly atmospheric. Vanishing Point has had an uneven production record but this time the creative mix has brought what was looking like a lost company back on track. © Thelma Good 3 November 2004, revised 8 November 2004. - Published on EdinburghGuide.com Edinburghguide reviews of other Vanishing Point shows Sauchiehall Street 2004, Stars Beneath the Sea 2003, Invisible Man 2001. *Note and Comment Thanks to Matthew Lenton who supplied all the recorded artists names. It is interesting that the choice of the Lost Ones musical compositions from many nationalities and backgrounds forms a unified whole. But I would like to see theatre companies give credit in their programmes to the recorded music they use - far too few do. Whilst the artists are paid via the Performing Rights Society for use of their recordings, hearing one of their tracks may interest an audience member and a credit in the programme allows any interest to be followed up. Cast: Theodore - Sandy Grierson, Mrs Hendry and Lillie - Tânia Guerreiro, Adele and Millie - Claire Lamont, Billy and Creature - Alasdair Macrae, Teacher and Creature - Itxaso Moreno, Millie's Imagination - Matthew Lenton. 2004 Tour Details of Vanishing Point's production of Lost Ones.
