Death brings the best and worse out of relatives. Agony of loss, a chance
to even up scores, secrets revealed and sometimes an opportunity to rebond,
to start afresh as the family of the deceased moves towards a funeral
- it all happens in The Memory of Water. Take a hanky, but be prepared
also to laugh.
Director Muriel Romanes has gathered together a cracking cast. It's hard
to believe they aren't related as the eldest sister always coping but
into new therapies Theresa, played by Jennifer Black, and the youngest
never got it together yet Catherine, Molly Innes, are thrown into
even sharper relief by the never seeming to put a foot wrong Mary, Alexandra
Mathie.
Mary, the most undipsy sister, is the one her newly dead mother visits.
Mary accepts her coming, as grieving people often do, never questioning
why her mother's spirit is drawn to speak to her. Mary Keegan is
the mother looking like a glamorous socialite about to go out for her
weekly dance with their Dad. Men are not so much sidelined in this play,
more out maneuvered. Theresa is married to patient but not a doormat Frank,
Crawford Logan in fine trig while Mary has a married lover Mike, played
with noticeable masculine emotion by Simon Coury.
The family home set suggests both the house's past with much strewn toys
and clutter, the convolutions of the brain where memory is eluted into
myth and the cliff erosion the old home is threatened by. The whole is
lit in underwater green/blue light while at times we hear the sea just
a few yards from the window. There is one confusing touch - the model
house at the back of the set has lit windows which go on and off and then
on and off again. Why I could not fathom, as all my theories bit the dust
it became an irritating distraction.
It's a richly textured play in a production full of the pain and joy of
being related, one to warm the heart and release tears.
