Stunning monsoon of a show.

Rain's a marvel of balance physical and emotional, hung on the rehearsal of circus artists in an old theatre. We see them on stage, trying out their numbers sometimes just like a performance, other times they wind one another up, continuing long held rivalries. There's music from an onstage pianist whose instrument is climbed and danced on by acrobatic women and a soundtrack of music that ranges from comic French, (or should it be Quebequois music) to compositions of extraordinary spirtiual power. This is circus of a whole new order.

Montreal based Cirque Éloize is theatre, spectacular, leaping beyond the ring and the Big Top zillions of lightyears from the circus where one or two moments astound. In this we see acts which reach back not only to pervious centuries' finest, but further beyond the last Millennium to the Greeks and back even further.

There's a strong man and a strong woman, several trapeze acts including two female arielists who hang in the air from one bar in ways that seem impossible but like all the troupe are accomplished with balletic skill and many other amazing sights. A man spins freely around the stage in a huge ring, two men balance with one another in gravity defying ways, and the ancient art of juggling both slow and fast . The show provokes laughter, awe, amazement and pleasure at what finely trained human bodies can do. In one piece where five arielists use hanging silk tissues to slide up into the heights and slip and spin downwards to a soundtrack whose religious flavour feels astonishingly just right.

The lighting, setting and costumes never outshine the performers no gaudy rhinestones or garish coloured props. Towards the end of the second half the stage is flooded with water and rain falls on Rain to add the delight of sliding in liquid to those of swinging through the air. The troupe are multi-talented so that the whole is a stunning monsoon of a show made by extraordinary individual artists under the imaginative direction of Daniele Finzi Pasca..
