This is a fast paced production of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy of star crossed lovers. The design is stylish without being elaborate. It creates the setting for the drama with simple motifs and elements - fragments of baroque ceiling paintings, metal bars. The drama is set in an unreal Verona –a place that seems both familiar and strange. The time and costume is a mixture of the historic and the contemporary. The effect is unsettling in the way that fairy tales can be. It highlights the timelessness of the core theme.

The mostly young cast bring enthusiasm and energy to the text so that even the most creaky bits of the plot don’t stretch our credibility. The central couple especially are believable in their impetuousness and youth. They make us care about their fate, while shaking our heads at their youthful absurdities. It is a hard task to deliver lines which are so familiar to an audience and to do so as if they are new minted.

This is an action packed production. The fight sequences and dance and high energy entrances and exits move the drama forward. But it is not all furious stage business. The actors are at home with the spoken text. They neither gabble incomprehensibly nor speak poetry in inverted commas in PR accents. They give due weight to Shakespeare’s language without losing its sense and dramatic momentum. The production works well through good ensemble playing by the cast.
