Playful but it doesn't fudge.

Rough Ruby's first public outing, a work in development isn't rough in any way as well as being a sparkling gem. Shiver takes two sisters Hannah and Greta and the modern world with its awful complications to make a contempoary folk tale. Simply staged with the two actors Kate Brailsford and Gillian Kerr playing neighbours, mortage advisors, a police man and a local ned as well as the sisters.

Hannah and Greta are two thirty somethings who haven't left the nest, Greta hasn't made it over her father's doorstep in a long while, Hannah seem more together but hasn't a steady job. When their mother dies and the stepmother gets tough they have to find somewhere else to live.

It's all told in a light and playful style set from the first but it doesn't fudge that finding your way through the wild woods to independence is fraught with obstacles and fears. It's even political as the two try to set up home in Grimmstoun and switch on their TV to watch decorating and house improvement shows.

It's well worth seeing and I hope Rough Ruby continue to mine this refreshing approach to making theatre. Shiver has fun as it gets us to see into ordindary peoples' lives and how folktales are still being lived today. Rough Ruby have let us see their first seed as it just growing, it has all the signs of an artistic team who will flourish.
